Fraudsters in Ghana show us how they use internet scams to steal thousands of dollars from unsuspecting victims all over the globe. -- While Nigeria's 401 scammers may have written the book on West African internet fraud, their shtick looks like Compuserve compared to what's going on in Ghana. Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way—witchcraft. Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs of the information age and started leading down-on-their-luck internet scammers through strange and costly rituals designed to increase their powers of persuasion and make their emails irresistible to greedy Americans. And so "Sakawa" was born. Now not only is Sakawa Ghana's most popular youth activity and one of its biggest underground economies, it's a full-blown national phenomenon. Sakawa has its own tunes, clothing brands, Sakawasploitation flicks, and even a metastatic backlash from Christian preachers and the press. When we were in Accra over the summer it was impossible to walk more than 10 feet without seeing the word Sakawa in blood-red Misfits letters on a poster or tabloid, often accompanied by bone-chilling horrors of the photoshopped variety. The government is freaked out because Sakawa is threatening Ghana's business reputation, the Christians are freaked out because they're losing money to the Juju priests, the press is freaked out because being freaked out is what sells papers, and the public is freaked out because their government, preacher, and media are all telling them they should be. All the while the Sakawa boys are living the high life and racking up debts to the spirit world, just waiting for the axe to fall. When the bags are sold, the money goes back to pay for school expenses and a percentage of the sales goes directly to the students who created the bags. At the 2014 Professional Development Retreat with 60 Unit School Teachers in Sunyani, Ghana, Mary Osei gave a talk on how to start Ghanaian Bags vocational training in the other Unit Schools in Ghana. With a donation by Natalie Motamedi-Rad's uncle Memo Motamedi-Rad, head teachers in unit schools across Ghana received funding to purchase the necessary equipment and materials to replicate the Oboom Ghana Bag project. http://leadersproject.org/blog/2014/01/03/ghana-january-2014-insights-through-collaborations-sunyani-professional-development Catherine (Cate) Crowley, J.D., Ph.D., CCC-SLP of the speech-language pathology program at Teachers College Columbia University, has been working with the "Unit Schools" of Ghana's Ministry of Education, Division of Special Education, since 2008. She brings her graduate students to Ghana to collaborate with colleagues to help address the needs of people with communication disabilities in Ghana. Additional videos, blogs, and materials on Cate Crowley's work in Ghana is available on the Leadersproject.org. http://leadersproject.org/media/video/ghana-2012-day-effiduasi-unit-school-children-disabilities Some of the students who have traveled to Ghana founded the "International Inclusion Project" with the intent of supporting greater inclusion of people with disabilities in their homes, schools, and communities. The Ghana Bags project developed by the Aboom School provides its students with an income which underscores their abilities and values. The International Inclusion Project is selling these Ghana Bags in fundraisers in the U.S. and sending the profits back to the Oboom School. In addition, individual students and their families have donated funds to pay for the fabric and other materials needed to create the bags, thereby increasing the profit and percentage that the Oboom students receive for their work. Claire Crowley, a 2014 high school senior of Lawrenceville School, in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, has worked with Mary Osei and the Oboom School students to ensure that the Ghana Bags are especially appealing to teenagers and young adults in the U.S. Claire used the financial part of a leadership award she received from her school to travel to Ghana twice to buy fabric and work with the students. Claire has sold these bags to her friends and family, sending all sales back to the Oboom School. In addition, Claire did most of the camerawork for this video. But there is also another side to the continent. Fast-growing economies and investment opportunities. The Dutch production company Interactive Africa focuses its lens precisely on the innovative side of Africa with its online video reports Spark Africa.

Also visit: www.africa-interactive.com Spark Africa is about innovative developments you hear little about. All the items are produced by African journalists and cameramen which creates a different dynamics compared to when a white European crew is used.

Among other fascinating reports comprising this 20-episodes video series, we take a look at how for example an entrepreneur from Friesland in the Netherlands has established a successful dairy business in Tanzania and how students from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, came about to invent a bicycle charger for mobile phones.

The video reportages are a mix of portraits of Dutch entrepreneurs in Africa, African inventors and reports on fast-growing industries like the outsourcing of ICT work in Africa.

The maximum duration for Instagram videos is 15 seconds.[7] Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and launched in October 2010 as a free mobile app. The service rapidly gained popularity, with over 100 million active users as of April 2012[8][9] and over 300 million as of December 2014.[10] Instagram is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play.[11] Support for the app is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android handsets, while third-party Instagram apps are available for BlackBerry 10 and Nokia-Symbian Devices.[12][13] The service was acquired by Facebook in April 2012 for approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock.[14] In 2013, Instagram grew by 23%, while Facebook, as the parent company, only grew by 3%.[15]
